Le carburateur est un dispositif dont le but est d'alimenter un moteur à allumage commandé avec un mélange de carburant et d'air. Les carburateurs comprennent généralement une chambre de stockage du carburant liquide, un starter, un gicleur de ralenti (ou ralenti), un gicleur principal, un réducteur de débit d'air en forme de venturi et une pompe d'accélération. En général, un carburateur de voiture permet de régler la quantité de carburant et le mélange d'air entrant dans le cylindre du moteur.
