Un distributeur est chargé de veiller à ce que l'étincelle soit distribuée aux bougies d'allumage pour faire démarrer la voiture. Le distributeur fait partie du système d'allumage de la voiture et sert à générer la haute tension dans la bobine d'allumage qui est ensuite distribuée aux cylindres du moteur, grâce à une étincelle transmise par un capteur à effet Hall qui provoque l'allumage du mélange de carburant dans les cylindres. Si le distributeur de la voiture est usé, il peut provoquer un refus de démarrage et des problèmes.
